I’ve seen Austin change a lot over the past three and a half decades.

I remember when Circle C felt like it was way out of town. When 183 was practically Oklahoma. When South Congress was full of scrappy, locally owned shops—and when Leslie strolled 6th Street like he owned the place. (Which, in a way, he did.)

Not all change is bad. In fact, a lot of it’s been good.

I still love Austin. And I’ve got a lot of hope for where this city is headed. There aren’t many places that blend the seat of government, a thriving arts scene, a world-class university, and a booming tech corridor—all wrapped up in breakfast tacos.

Austin’s still special. And I think it’s going to stay that way, if we keep caring about it.

It’s mid-July and, for once, Central Texas isn’t baking, it’s blooming. After weeks of rare rain, Lake Travis has surged nearly 30 feet, plants like Mexican oregano are suddenly showstoppers, and even tough old Bermuda grass is thriving roadside.
