My wife went to Eberly last week. Swanky restaurant. Great bar. Amazing food. It’s the kind of place that seems built for Instagram stories. Cool, cool, cool… but I can’t help be remember the OG Eberly…
Eberly is named after Angelina Belle Peyton Eberly, an Austin innkeeper who became a sort-of local hero during the Archive War of 1842.
Here’s what went down:
In 1842, President Sam Houston (and his men) tried to secretly move the Republic of Texas’s archives out of Austin—essentially arguing that the capital should be somewhere else….you guessed it…Houston.
Angelina figured out what was happening and fired a six-pound cannon into the General Land Office to raise the alarm and galvanize the townspeople.
The bold move helped preserve Austin’s status as the capital.
So yes, when you drink you fancy cocktail, you’re basically paying homage to someone who defended Austin with a cannon.
Also: the bar inside Eberly is the historic Cedar Tavern bar from New York—hand-carved mahogany, original pieces, shipped and reassembled right here.
Anyway, I thought that was a cool piece of Austin history…

💰 Travis County approves $2.2B recovery budget
The Gist: Travis County leaders passed a $2.2 billion budget for 2025-26, funded in part by a one-year property tax hike. The budget prioritizes flood recovery, rebuilding emergency reserves, and major investments in health care and mental health services, including an $86 million diversion center to help people in crisis avoid jail.
