I just finished reading the Austin Business Journal about what the next 10 years of tech innovation might look like. AI, robotics, energy breakthroughs, big, world-changing stuff. It got me fired up.
But last week, I also went to an event for vendors who serve HOAs, landscapers, painters, roofers, insurance providers. The sweaty, boring, unglamorous businesses that quietly keep neighborhoods running.
And the juxtaposition hit me: the flashy future and the sweaty present. One’s changing the world. The other’s mowing the yard. And both are essential.
(Obviously, I live in the sweaty side of things. So if your HOA, or your home needs help, you can find us at topchoiceaustin.com. We’re good at the unflashy stuff.)

But big picture? I love this city. Austin’s gone from the top of the tier-two cities to the bottom of the tier-one cities. It means we’re now in the room when big ideas get pitched, that’s cool, but we’ve still got dirt under our fingernails.
That’s a combo I’ll take any day.
Cheers,
Nolan

💡 Austin Pauses Utility Rate Hikes

The Gist: Austin City Council voted July 24 to temporarily suspend proposed gas and electric rate hikes from Texas Gas Service and Oncor. The 90-day pause is the maximum allowed by law and gives city staff time to review the increases and explore alternatives with legal counsel and other municipalities.
Why It Matters: The move delays higher utility bills for thousands of Austin households while the city pushes for a fairer deal.

It’s the end of July, and instead of scorched lawns and wilted blooms, Central Texas is looking downright cheerful. New Gold Lantana is glowing, Yellow Bells are holding strong, and Crape Myrtles are strutting their summer stuff.
Speaking of Crape Myrtles, we’ve got a quick crash course on their history, surprising origins, and why too much TLC (aka water) can actually hold them back. A little stress makes for better blooms, who knew?
Check it out HERE.
