I was digging into a little Austin history this week because it’s fun to know where this place came from, and a few things jumped out at me.

  1. Austin was founded in 1839 as the capital of the Republic of Texas. At the time, people thought it was way too far west, basically in the middle of nowhere. Fewer than a thousand people lived here.

  2. The spot was originally called Waterloo before being renamed after Stephen F. Austin. Between you and me, Waterloo Records probably sounds cooler than Austin Records, so I’m glad the old name didn’t disappear completely.

  3. My favorite fact…The Archive War of 1842. President Sam Houston tried to move the capital back to (you guessed it) Houston, and Austin residents flat-out refused. Armed locals fought to keep the official records here - which is why Austin is still the capital.

  4. The city plan itself was clever, Congress Avenue running straight from the river to the Capitol, set up on the highest hill. You can still feel that design when you drive north across the bridge and see the pink dome holding court at the top.

In short: Austin started small, a little scrappy, and very defiant. Sounds about right.

Cheers,
Nolan

🍴 Hidden gem flavors at Indian Fusion
🏟️ Lake Travis HS stadium expansion set for 2026
🎨 Sculptures, sounds & surprises around Austin
🎸 Laughs, loud riffs & lively Austin energy

🔥 Big flavor, low profile

1158 Lost Creek Blvd, Austin

Indian Fusion is a food truck that punches far above its weight. The menu blends Indian classics with a few playful twists, from tender Lamb Rogan Josh and smoky Tandoori Chicken to Chili Chicken Momos that bring a sweet-spicy kick. Garlic naan is perfectly fluffy, lassis come fruity and refreshing, and portions are generous enough for leftovers.

They may not have much of an online presence, but the glowing Google reviews say it all. With friendly service, picnic-style seating, and bold flavors in every bite, it’s a hidden gem worth seeking out.

🏟️ Lake Travis HS stadium to nearly double capacity by 2026

The Gist: Lake Travis High School will replace its Cavalier Stadium in a $48.3 million project that expands seating from 7,400 to 12,000. The new facility will also feature a women’s field house, press box, locker rooms, concession stands, and a spirit store.

Why It Matters: With Lake Travis’ booming community and packed Friday night lights, the upgrade will give fans, athletes, and students a modern venue that matches the school’s size and spirit.

What’s Next: Demolition begins next month, with construction set to finish by late 2026.

Late August is sneaking up, and Central Texas landscapes are shifting gears. H-E-B is already stocking purple fountain grass and Japanese yews, a sure sign that fall planting season is on deck.

Meanwhile, white trailing lantana and desert spoon are thriving in a Buda yard we visited, lizards are lounging on cast iron plants, and mosquitoes are making a comeback in puddled leaf pods. Oh, and last week’s rain? Don’t let it fool your irrigation system.
