What is changing
Lake Travis ISD is planning a major expansion of its pre K program for the 2026 27 school year. The district will add pre K classrooms at two new campuses, West Cypress Hills Elementary and Lakeway Elementary. Additional classrooms will also be added at existing sites based on space and need, including Serene Hills, Lake Travis and Lake Pointe elementaries.
According to Lyndsae Benton, the district’s executive director of curriculum and instruction, LTISD currently serves about 194 pre K students. Benton said the program has seen strong retention, with most students continuing in the district after completing pre K.
Why the expansion is needed
District leaders said the expansion is driven by consistent demand from families. LTISD has maintained a waitlist for pre K every year. Recent waitlist totals include 72 students in 2021 22, 64 in 2022 23, 142 in 2023 24, 121 in 2024 25 and 119 students for the current 2025 26 school year.
The district has added classrooms in the past to help address demand. One classroom was added at Serene Hills and Lake Pointe in 2022 23, followed by another classroom at Lake Pointe in 2023 24. Benton said the goal of the upcoming expansion is to accommodate the entire waitlist.
Program details
LTISD’s pre K program serves students who turn four on or before Sept. 1. A half day option is also available for three year old early childhood special education students. Tuition is 6,500 dollars, paid from August through May, but the program is free for students who meet state eligibility requirements.
What comes next
District staff plan to begin marketing and community outreach efforts in January. Applications for the expanded pre K program are scheduled to open April 1.
The expansion marks another step as LTISD works to meet growing early education needs across the district.
