District invests in renewable energy to cut costs

Eanes Independent School District has unveiled a districtwide solar energy program expected to save approximately $700,000 each year, a key step in addressing its $3.3 million budget shortfall. District leaders announced the initiative during an October 30 press conference at West Ridge Middle School in Austin.

The project, approved as part of the 2023 Bond program, was designed to reduce energy costs while advancing environmental sustainability. By expanding its solar capacity, Eanes ISD expects to offset nearly half of its annual electricity expenses.

Rebates and federal incentives drive project success

Chief Financial Officer Chris Scott said the district leveraged $3.5 million in Austin Energy rebates and $2.5 million in federal incentives to fund the project. “The solar energy program represents a win for both our district and our community,” Scott said. “It’s a clear example of fiscal responsibility and innovation working together to benefit our schools.”

Solar arrays were installed across eight campuses, with the long-term savings to be reinvested into district operations. The installations were completed by Axis Solar of Austin, whose owners are Eanes ISD residents and active supporters of the Eanes Elementary PTO and Eanes Education Foundation.

A model for sustainable education

The initiative has drawn statewide attention as an example of how schools can achieve financial stability through renewable energy. The program also recently received the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Austin Impact Award for Most Influential Project, recognizing its community impact and environmental leadership.

District officials said the savings will help maintain educational programs and staffing while reducing the district’s reliance on traditional energy sources. The program reflects Eanes ISD’s broader goal of balancing fiscal responsibility with sustainability for future generations.
