It’s back-to-school week.

By the end of summer, parents start to get a little desperate. The kids do too. “We want to see our friends!” and suddenly the whole house feels like a low-level riot. Add in the yearly sticker shock of school supplies, and you’ve got a recipe for chaos.

But we’re ready. Schedules return. Lunches get packed. The house is quiet — at least for part of the day. It’s a beautiful thing.

The Gist: On Aug. 6, the Texas Senate approved a bill to lower the property tax revenue cap for cities and counties with more than 75,000 residents, including Austin, from 3.5% to 2.5%. Voter approval would be required to exceed the limit. Governor Greg Abbott pointed to Austin’s proposed 24% tax increase as an example the bill aims to address. SB 9 would not affect new construction and now heads to the House.

Why It Matters: If passed, the bill could slow property tax growth in Austin and give residents more say in future rate increases.
