Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has opened the West Infill project, expanding the Barbara Jordan Terminal by over 75,000 square feet across four levels. The expansion includes a new TSA Checkpoint, scheduled to start operations on February 23, 2026.

Expansion overview

Part of the airport’s ongoing Journey With AUS program, the project addresses the rapid growth in passenger traffic, which reached more than 21 million travelers annually—five years ahead of the projections outlined in the AUS 2040 Master Plan. The expansion was initiated after a surge in passengers in 2022 and provides additional TSA capacity prior to the construction of a future centralized checkpoint.

Key improvements

The West Infill includes an eight-lane TSA Checkpoint and a 1.5-mile outbound baggage system that can process up to 4,000 bags per hour. Three new ticketing counters support airline operations, and the project adds dedicated spaces for airline functions, staff offices, and passenger amenities. Art installations feature all six works from the Voyages series and the return of the Austin Downtown Cruiser. Sustainability upgrades aim for an Austin Energy Green Building 3-star rating through efficient systems and environmentally responsible materials. Other infrastructure enhancements include a standalone HVAC system, new elevators, and updated mechanical, electrical, and IT systems.

Project funding and completion

The $241 million project was funded through airport revenues, FAA grants, future revenue bonds, and $15.99 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, with no taxpayer money used. Whiting-Turner served as the prime contractor, Gensler as the architect, and AECOM provided subject matter expertise. The expansion finished ahead of schedule and on budget.
