The Anatomy of “That’s Funny” (Text Edition)

I was thinking recently about the anatomy of texting “this is funny.”

We’ve got a lot of options these days. And they all mean very different things.

Here’s my working legend:
• lol: I acknowledge this was intended to be funny.
• haha: Mild internal smirk. Respectable effort.
• hahaha: I smiled outwardly. We’re getting somewhere.
• hahahahahahahaha: Actual laugh. Possibly a snort. Strong work.
• 😂 (crying laughing emoji): This is polite. Possibly a pity laugh. Proceed with caution.
• 😂😂😂 (multiple emojis): Now we’re talking. You’ve earned it.
• Tapback “haha”: I don’t want to clog the thread, but I recognize the joke. Efficient.
• No response: I saw it. I chose silence. Tough scene.
• GIF: The highest form of human communication. Modern hieroglyphics. Reserved for elite moments.

And the truth is… there are probably 20 more variations depending on timing, punctuation, and who’s in the group chat.

It’s a complex system. A delicate ecosystem. And we all instinctively understand it.

Anyway next time someone sends you a “lol,” just know… it might not mean what you think it means.
